Speech pathology

The Speech Pathologists at MontroseAccess aim to support children in maintaining and developing their speech, language, literacy, and swallowing skills. We work with children, families, caregivers, and educational staff to meet the needs of our clients. Speech Pathologists may provide support in a number of areas, including:

  • Speech (the ability to correctly produce speech sounds)
  • Language comprehension (understanding the spoken and written word)
  • Language expression (the ability to formulate and express ideas using grammar and vocabulary)
  • Augmentative and alternative communication (communication methods other than speech that are used instead of, or to assist spoken communication)
  • Development of literacy skills
  • Auditory processing skills (the ability to process what we hear)
  • Problem solving and thinking skills
  • Social skills
  • Fluent speech (stuttering)
  • Voice (eg. too loud or soft, huskiness)
  • Swallowing and mealtime issues

Reading 4 Fun

MontroseAccess is running a new program called Reading 4 Fun. This project aims to promote language, literacy and a love of books amongst our clients. It will take the form of connecting trained volunteers to MontroseAccess clients for regular joint book reading. These sessions will be for an hour per week at a negotiated time in your home. It will initially occur for a period of three months, and then will be extended for up to six months at a time, where mutually convenient.

The goals of this volunteer program are to:

  • Give clients the opportunity to share books with a volunteer on a regular basis
  • Give parents a regular quiet moment
  • Promote a love of books amongst our clients
  • Support ongoing oral language and literacy development amongst our clients

If you are interested in finding out more information or would like your child/yourself to be involved, please contact either your team Speech Pathologist or the Reading 4 Fun coordinator Marion Langdon on (07) 3881 7902, or send an email
